IN THE BEGINNING
SHOPFRONTS were slow to change and so were the interiors. Every area of retail from the corner store to the large department store looked exactly the same. The customer was greeted by sales staff who were separated by counters. Change began with 5 Sydney businessmen who emulated the concept they had seen in America. It was an open display chain store. The idea was an instant success and by 1928, they had opened four Woolworths stores; 33 by 1933 and by 194; 86 stores in Australia and New Zealand. It became apparent that the increased exposure of stock drove sales and also reduced the need for sales staff.
